Corinthian 1 First Team 2

Sunday, April 29, 2018

Billy Bennett’s injury-time winner guaranteed Sevenoaks Town promotion on another historic night for the club. He struck in the 92nd minute to beat eight-man Corinthian, and ensure Town of a top-two finish with two games left.

The hosts had Jack Billings, Jack Holland and AJ Billings sent off in the final half hour, before Bennett got the vital touch following a goalmouth scramble, to settle the contest and spark off jubilant scenes.

Greg Benbow’s deep cross was nodded down by substitute Mark Jones, Corinthian goalkeeper Adrian Prall punched the ball away, but Bennett timed his run perfectly to the edge of the six-yard box, clipping the ball over three defenders into the net. He weaved away in delight, with skipper Corey Holder the first to congratulate him before being submerged under several more players.

Town had survived several anxious moments, and another missed penalty after Tom Ripley had given them a 25th minute lead only for a defensive mix-up to gift Corinthian’s Malik Ouani an equaliser with almost the last kick of the first half.

The game started to unravel around the hour mark when referee Jordan Whitworth pointed to the spot after AJ Billings felled Byron Walker in the box. The Town striker needed lengthy treatment before limping off to be replaced by Jones. Billings was booked, Sawyer - scorer of two spot-kicks against Sheppey - stepping up to see his first effort saved, and the follow-up hit the post.

Jamie Billings, booked five minutes earlier was then involved in an off the ball incident - Mr Whitworth consulting an assistant before producing two yellows - and reducing Corinthian to 10-men. Pogue’s booking was his tenth - meaning he starts next season with a two-match ban.

Jack Holland then received a straight red after tangling with Ben Wilson in another skirmish on 90 minutes, before AJ Billings got his marching orders eight minutes later following his second yellow. Even with eight, Corinthian still caused problems, before Town’s last attack produced the perfect outcome.
