Joe Bingham's penalty and a late strike by substitute Darren Marsden confirmed Sevenoaks Town's passage into the next round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
Another new signing Tom Youngs also scored on his debut, putting Town ahead after 15 minutes, but they lived dangerously at times in the first ever meeting against Southern Combination side Broadbridge Heath West Sussex.
Brett Ince had drilled Town's first effort wide of the far post, before Youngs knocked in the rebound after Heath keeper Michael Chester failed to hold Harrison Carnegie's low effort.
Youngs saw another effort deflected for a corner, before Carnegie got past a defender only to see his effort saved low down.
Heath waited until the 32nd minute before Town striker Tim Martin tested new keeper Craig Holloway.
However that was the trigger for Heath to finish the half strongly, Martin heading over the bar, and then a free-kick eluded the diving Holloway, hitting the far post and staying out.
Sixty seconds later the the visitors were level, Scott Weller finishing well as the clock ticked towards first half stoppage time.
There was still time for Ince to set-up Billy Bennett but his shot was saved.
Andy Irvine replaced Ince at half-time with Town looking to start the second period better.
Corey Holder headed Greg Benbow's corner across the face of goal, and Youngs saw his effort saved.
Heath's George Cousins went close before Irvine laid Carnegie in only to see his fall way off target.
Marsden replaced Billy Bennett after 66 minutes - and five minutes later won a spot-kick seeing the ball strike the hand of Heath defender Shaun Findlay - Essex referee Andrew Simmonds pointing to the spot.
Town's success rate last season from 12 yards was poor, but Bingham's powerful strike beat Chesters, despite him going the right way, and getting a touch on the ball.
Chesters however was found wanting in the build-up for Town's third in stoppage time, racing out of goal only for Irvine to lay in Marsden who fired home low to confirm a Preliminary Round trip to Cray Wanderers.
