Our second home match and expectations were high. So far, we'd had an excellent start to the season. Langton Green had a good result against Maidstone last week but were still waiting for their first win.
Will and Archie were not available and Connor was rested. Unfortunately, Tommy suffered a late injury on Saturday and could not play, on top of some of the other players showing strains of various recent injuries too.
The opening minutes were probably the best of the whole game which turned out to be a very scrappy affair. Sevenoaks certainly showed the better football and even created some half chances. It was in the 11th minute when, from a corner, Piers Fautley scored the opening goal. His powerful shot was impossible for the Langton goalkeeper to clear. 1-0
From then on the match became very messy. Although ball possession was still pretty much 50-50, neither side really showed any danger in front of each other's goal. The great level of football, we are now so accustomed too, was nowhere to be seen.
During half time, Sam expressed his frustration: “Messy, too many touches and no willingness to fight.”
It was therefore no surprise when literally in the first minute, Langton Green equalised with a shot on goal from a fair distance. The goal did not act as a wake-up call for the Sevenoaks boys and Langton Green grew in confidence.
It took the visitors 20 minutes to gain advantage of the Sevenoaks poor level of performance when, after some chaotic scenes in the box, they extended their lead. 1-2
Quickly some tactical changes were made, but our boys did not believe they were able to turn this around. In quick succesion, Langton managed to find the Sevenoaks net twice more and the afternoon finished in a very disappointing loss. 1-4
Overall a hugely below par performance which stemmed from a dearth of spirit and fight resulting in a very scrappy game. We are sure the boys will bounce back from this defeat.
