The U16's Tandridge team rounded off their season with a solid win against Purley Panthers Colts to extend their unbeaten run to thirteen games.
The first ten minutes were fairly even, with neither side creating any clear cut chances. Sevenoaks were then gifted a chance following a slip in Purley’s defence. Sam Sherratt took advantage to race through and give Sevenoaks the lead with a clam finish.
Following this Sevenoaks took control and began to dominate possession, with man of the match Jamie Bingham particularly impressive in central midfield. Showing more composure, Sevenoaks began to spread the ball wide and chances and goals followed. Jamie Downs added the second (following a strong run down the left and cross by Toby Fitzmaurice) and the third (following a brilliant cross from the right by Sam Sherratt), taking his tally of goals for the year to 30! However, with the game seemingly sown up, Sevenoaks allowed Purley a glimmer of hope when some uncharacteristic complacency at the back allowed them to pull a goal back just before the break.
Buoyed by the goal, Purley started the second half quickly and Sevenoaks were forced to defend for an extended period for the first time in the game. However, as so often this season, Sevenoaks defended well and restricted Purley to half chances. This allowed Sevenoaks to retake the initiative and when Toby Fitzmaurice added a fourth mid-way through the half, the game was effectively won. Purley did get a second in the dying moments, but this was little more than a consolation.
The thirteen game unbeaten run has kept Sevenoaks in the league title race right to the finish. In the end, however, results for the other top teams didn’t go Sevenoaks’ way and it’s likely they will fall just short. This, however, shouldn’t detract from what has been a brilliant effort this season.
