The Under 16's Tandridge team put in a good, solid performance to win 2-0 against Oxted and District in this Tandridge League game.
On a difficult pitch following heavy rain, Sevenoaks looked in control from the start. Strong performances from Henry Phillips, Ben Packer, and Joseph Russell in midfield allowed Sevenoaks to control possession and push forward. Oxted, however, defended deep and Sevenoaks struggled to create many clear cut chances. Jamie Downs and Toby Fitzmaurice both had half chances, but, in the end, it took a set piece to break the deadlock. Joseph Russell swung in a perfect corner that Jamie Downs met with a precise header at the far post to give Sevenoaks the lead. At the other end, Oxted did occasionally threaten on the break, but Sevenoaks’ defence maintained good concentration and Alex Theobald in goal was rarely threatened.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Sevenoaks dominated possession and continued to press forward. But a number of chances went begging before Sevenoaks finally got their second, thanks to an excellent finish by Jamie Downs one-on-one with the goalkeeper. This effectively settled the game, but Sevenoaks continued to press, with man of the match Toby Fitzmaurice, in particular, standing out for his work rate and willingness to run at Oxted’s defence. Sevenoaks couldn’t add to their lead, but this was a solid win and another vital three points in the title race.
